Residential: Dilworth Garden

Energized by a lively renovation, this landscape sparkles with form, texture and color around the entire property!

  • Energized by a lively renovation, this landscape sparkles with form, texture and color around the entire property!
  • Front foundation planting beds and an artful the lawn are defined by cobble edging. Plant selections feature low-maturing cultivars to showcase the stone foundation. A planned mix of evergreen, woody deciduous and perennial plants assures garden interest and structure in all seasons. A transplanted Japanese maple graces the home’s entrance and adds a stabilizing overhead element.
  • Handsome stone knee walls with picket toppers naturally extend the front house corner providing context for double gates held firmly between well-proportioned stone columns. Masses of mazus spread around large stepping-stones meandering from the courtyard through the side gate and connecting to the cobble-edged front lawn.
  • To add interest along the existing driveway, a unique composition of garden pots, herbs, a dry creek feature and mazus groundcovers deliver contrasts of color and green relief in this highly visible spot.
  • An alternate view of the same area of the landscape enlivens the senses from every angle.

  • Along the southwest property line, a custom-designed semi-privacy fence sets the tone. Within each lower section, a repeating arched pattern rhythmically directs the eye toward the arbor entrance into an enclosed courtyard garden.
  • In back, the veranda, remains a favorite family space, now easily extends onto a spacious fieldstone patio. Stacked stone seat walls capped with thick cut stone form the patio’s curved edge with openings that lead into the yard via large stepping stone paths. Planted ajuga spreads between the stones and adds a plush evergreen element to a deeply shady situation. A planted eyebrow arbor and low stone wall with picket fence topper appealingly separate the patio and veranda from cars parked on the adjacent drive.Attached to the existing sunporch, an intimate stone-floored patio also serves to guide storm water away from the house and offers relaxed respite amid lushly planted raised stone planters.
