Residential: Charming Elizabeth Bungalow

Owners of this updated Elizabeth bungalow asked for an uplifting landscape renovation that would incorporate existing large trees and a dominating back-yard kids’ sports court.

  • The owners of this Elizabeth bungalow visualized a fresh, no-lawn front courtyard, connecting side gardens and a back deck primarily for adult use. They were seeking a calming, Asian-influence: high on style, low on clutter.
  • Compositions of smooth, cool river rock with boulders and over-sized natural stone paths with crushed stone infill commingle with expansive carpets of plush, colorful groundcovers in a rich, flowing ground plane.
  • These homeowners's visualized a fresh, no-lawn front courtyard, connecting side garden and back yard decking primarily for adult use. They were seeking a calming, Asian influence: high on style, low on clutter.
  • Custom-designed features boost the oriental theme, as well as address critical site challenges. Permeable path materials, including large stepping stepping-stones with mondo or crushed stone infill, cobbled pavers and re-purposed old firebrick effectively manage storm-water and are essentially dog and child-proof.
  • Texture and dimension flow as various species and genres of stone co-mingle throughout the space.

  • The custom cedar fencing adds to the Asian tone set throughout this design.
  • A trio of cut iron bamboo screens , teamed with three raised cedar planters, create a rhythm of surprise and interest along the narrow side garden path. These features provide a modest sense of privacy, elevating plants to provide a living screen.
  • The flora specimens used throughout the design provide texture, dimension and privacy to the backyard.
  • Owners of this updated Elizabeth bungalow asked for an uplifting landscape renovation that would incorporate existing large trees and a dominating back-yard kids’ sports court.
  • Spanning the unused portion of the back yard, a floating wooden deck engages the large existing tree without harm, making good use of the root-infested soil by providing adequate space for adult relaxation and is an appropriate scale to visually offset the kid’s sport court.
  • The completed landscape design promotes an overall sense of calm while present in the space, making it difficult to depart!
