Residential: Cotswold Contemporary

This design earned Solow Design Group the NCASLA Award of Merit in 2014.

We used the contemporary appeal of this Cotswold home to dictate the direction of the landscape design. Starting with the front façade of the home you will see it is brimming with urban appeal. This contemporary garden delivers a friendly sense of privacy. The landscape is overflowing with amenities and details for comfortable outdoor enjoyment.

  • This evening image taken of this contemporary home and landscape in Cotswold shows the magical union of professional landscape design and lighting. Lighting brings the colors, textures and dimension to life after dark for all-hour enjoyment!
  • Originally this lot had a traditional front yard which consisted of only grass with a Chinese elm tree which made the layout awkward.
Solow Design Group relocated the tree and ran with the idea of seperating the house from the street to give the space a courtyard effect, formal but not enclosed.
  • Tucked away to lthe left of the house is an existing private patio. We resurfaced the patio and installed pressed Mexican beach pebbles. Hardwood seating beckons family and friends to relax and linger in the courtyard.
  • We used architectural block on all the walls which are constructed of aggregate resulting in a multi-dimensional appeal that is enhanced by the use of dark mortar in the joints.
  • This area becomes a place to position an ornamental pot atop the beach pebbles. The edging surround features Cor-ten steel which will age to a sepia patina over time.
  • A coral bark Japanese maple creates seasonal color playing off the all gold shore juniper and accentuates the corner of the front courtyard majestically welcoming each new day.
  • A poured concrete walkway encompasses the side of the home and boulders are used for to enhance the textural aesthetic of the overal design.
  • Blue glass block adds interest to the parallel lines of the home's charcoal gray concrete siding. The block sits in a bed built from the same aggregate block used throughout the design...
  • The use of natural stone and custom outdoor lighting throughout helps soften the landscape and adds visual interest.
  • ...the blue glass block is creatively illuminated from underneath to increase the appeal of this unique landscape feature in the evening!
  • The innovative use of outdoor lighting is apparent throughout this design as it casts hauntingly beautiful shadows as specimen plants take on a life of their own after dark, such as this yucca.
  • Entry into the backyard, as seen here in the evening, is accentuated by cedar privacy gates.

  • We used alternating panels off wood and stainless steel down the fence line that runs the entire length of the side of the home.
  • The path is built from crushed stone and each alternating vignette serves as home to confederate jasmine; with an open invitation to climb the fence at will.

  • A purple butterfly bush in bloom adds a whimsical point of interest against the contemporary feel of the wall and fencing.
