Residential: Myers Park Retreat

Phased over several years, this landscape design dramatically improved vehicular circulation, replaced a dangerously decaying deck, transformed a disjointed back yard and upgraded the entire property’s aesthetic.

  • Phased over several years, this landscape design dramatically improved vehicular circulation, replaced a dangerously decaying deck, transformed a disjointed back yard and upgraded the entire property’s aesthetic.
  • Repositioning and re-shaping the front drive delivered immediate and property-wide impact. Originally running straight down the left property line, the driveway now curves luxuriously from near-center across to the home’s left side. Designed to ease car entry from the street (with a more accommodating angle, width and less steep descent over a longer length), the new driveway garnishes attention to the home’s pleasing architecture. It gracefully transitions into a sinuous brick paver walkway to the front door.
  • Phase two of this project began after the homeowners' deliberating for several years over desired function for their backyard. Our design allowed for more parking behind the house, which the homeowner wanted, and this area now leads down to a custom-designed upper deck that spills int a ground level patio. This unified the space and the lawn manages stormwater completely transforming the utility and use of the backyard environment.

  • The fireplace wings morph into boulder and stacked stone walls encasing a state-of-the-art grill and stovetop that virtually eliminate multiple trips to the upstairs kitchen. Along with several large boulders and nestled between low stone columns and a raised planter, a 2x8 solid cedar bench supplies additional seating and earthiness to the scene. Similarly, a small semi-circular patio penetrating the main patio consists of oversized field stones with spills of mazus in the joints between.
  • Majestic stacked stone walls retain the driveway extension and render an attractive divider between the lower stone patio and upper parking area.
  • You can also turn right and step down towards the grand focal point on the Tennesee fieldstone patio -- a 13 foot tall custom fireplace with a rough-sawn cedar mantel.Richly stained cedar forms the stairway and railings that wrap a larger deck onto a transitional brick landing. Turn left and on your way to the parking area you'll walk by a splash of ferns, fatsia and hosta nestled beneath the new deck.
  • 2” rockface stone ledges and a heavy stacked stone hearth echo the circular patio. This majestic fireplace undeniably defends the adage “where there’s a hearth, there’s a home”!

  • Views of the yard are spectacular from many vantage points: driving into the parking area, relaxing on the patio or the upper deck and looking out the windows from inside the house. The large expanse of verdant lawn rolls into splashy variegated leucothoe backed by red berried Liberty holly. Complimented by coppery orange heuchera, chartreuse hosta, five-fingered fatsia, a transplanted lacy red-leafed Japanese maple adorns a planted stepping stone garden niche.
  • An intimate spot to enjoy the beauty that abounds throughout this Myers Park backyard.
