  • On a wooded lot banking Lake Norman, this planned full-time residence presented a set of complex site challenges.
  • In addition to a site that drops dramatically-over 35 feet from street to lake- the space also required passable pedestrian and vehicular access and careful management of storm water by redirection and diffusion. Preserving as many of the large indigenous hardwoods took high priority in regards to site planning including structure design and methods focused on maintaining long-term tree health.
  • Landscape materials meld with the woodsy setting and complimnt the house. The asphalt driveway blends with the neutral colors of the woodlands while wide cobble bands and edge harmonize with the house stone and style.
  • To tackle the management of the storm water, we manipulated the driveway’s grade near the house and garage so that storm water is funneled funnels storm water into a drain near the front of the house. • Emerging from the drive, a cobble path winds down around and through the backyard gardens. Designed without steps, it becomes the path of choice for lawnmower or wheelbarrow, as well as a cool, direct foot route to the dock on warm summer days.

  • Large- scale stepping stones, some as wide as five-feet, amble gently below the upper wall, through a woodlands garden filled with ferns, forbs, perennials and blooming shrubs. Along its course, the path engages stunning views of the lake and slowly merges into a small sitting niche nestled in the circular stone wallstonewall.

  • The project includes an urban outdoor living space that includes a sunken Travertine patio with cable rail. The railing helps open up the view and is asethetically appealing.
  • This detail view of the railing and Mahogany rail cap show the warm complimentary feel of the patio as it melds into the woodland landscape.
  • Stairs become a focal point of interest and artistic design in this image.
